VISITING THE COUNTY HOTEL
STAY IN THE HEART OF CARLISLE
Located on the very edge of the Lake District, Carlisle is England's most northerly city to date. Surrounded by stunning scenery and close to various historic sites such as Hadrian's Wall; Carlisle is the perfect spot for a getaway.
THE CARLISLE CITADEL
The immense and impressive oval towers that dominate the southern entrance to the City of Carlisle, have a complex history. The two bastions known as The Citadel housed, until recently, the civil courts in the East Tower, and the criminal courts in the West Tower. The towers have recently undergone a major restoration, part funded by English Heritage, and the West Tower is now open to the public.
THE LAKE DISTRICT
Walkers call this county 'paradise'. Everywhere the grandeur of the scenery speaks to the glory of Cumbria. Welcome to this much-loved land. Located on the border of the stunning Lake District, Carlisle acts as the perfect base for a countryside getaway.
Explore the beauty of the nearby surroundings before heading back into the city for a taste of Carlisle nightlife on the bustling Botchergate Road!
Carlisle Cathedral was founded in 1122 and is well worth a visit today! The stained glass in the tracery of the east window dates back to the 14th Century, as does the barrel vaulted painted ceiling in the choir of the building.
There is a treasury containing not only a display of church silverware but also an exhibition of the development of Christianity in Cumbria.
Standing strongly in the city it has dominated for nine centuries, Carlisle Castle was a constantly updated working fortress until well within living memory. Now its rich and varied visitor attractions reflect its long and eventful history. Even before the medieval castle was begun, this site was an important Roman fortress.
